With the Graduation ceremonies now complete, the focus for those new to the job market is to secure their first post. We have seen a significant increase in those looking for their first job or work experience to give them the competitive edge. We always respond to everyone who contacts us, as we appreciate how hard it can be! We try to give some words of encouragement and advice too. Here are our 6 top tips: (click the link below to continue reading)

  1. If you’re going to contact an agency, find out about them first and write to a person within the organisation directly. We all like to be treated as individuals so a ‘Dear Sir/ Madam’ in a world full of information isn’t too personal.

  2. Do your homework on the agency. Does your style of work suits theirs? Do any particular projects stand out? It’s always worth mentioning them and what you liked in your communication too.

  3. Don’t be frightened to use the phone. You are much more likely to get a listening ear and some specific advice if you talk to people directly. You may also be able to react to the conversation, telling them about relevant experience you may have – or the opportunity to reveal your USP.

  4. Spellcheck your CV. It’s time to be formal. The text message style of random abbreviations won’t impress anyone.

  5. Attach your portfolio or some key work samples to your email, and give people the opportunity to view an online portfolio too.

  6. Connect with everyone you speak to, or have communication with. Networking is a valuable tool. Don’t be shy, take those Business Cards or ask for email addresses and contact numbers. You never know when you may bump into them during your successful career.

In a challenging job environment, you need to realise you are a commodity – a mini product, so it’s important to sell yourself. Don’t be put off by contacting agencies directly, in most cases, a job could be filled without advertising, because agencies get so many direct approaches from potential suitors. If you can’t get hold of the person you want straightaway, try again later on during the week. As for getting cranky or short responses – well, it’s good practice for the future when your great design idea gets the thumbs down. Dust yourself off, take a big breath and carry on, that opportunity you are working so hard to find will pop up.
